Maud Rowell is a freelance writer and translator based in London. After a year spent travelling and working in South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan, she read Japanese Studies at the University of Cambridge and then attained a Masters degree in magazine journalism. She was diagnosed with a degenerative sight condition aged 19 in a Seoul hospital, and since then has used her writing to explore and educate others on the topic of blindness, often through the lens of art and art history. In 2021, she won the Holman Prize, an annual $25,000 grant offered by the San Francisco Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired, enabling her to embark on a year-long trip around some of Japan’s most remote parts, and then write and illustrate a book about her travels. She sets off in April 2022. Hobbies include reading multilingual and experimental fiction, film photography - processed in the makeshift darkroom built by her father at home - and creative writing, in both Japanese and English.
